description Hiddenite Overview
Hiddenite is a rare green gemstone variety of the mineral spodumene, recognized for its pale to deep emerald-like green hues, which are caused by the presence of chromium. It was discovered in Alexander County, North Carolina, in 1879 and was subsequently named after the American mineralogist William Earl Hidden, who led the expedition that found it. The original North Carolina deposit remains the only source of deeply colored material, though lighter specimens have since been found in Brazil and Afghanistan. As a gemstone, it is highly valued by collectors but requires careful cutting due to its perfect cleavage.
