description Nephrite Overview
Nephrite is one of the two mineral materials commonly recognized as jade, the other being jadeite. It is a tough, compact aggregate of amphibole minerals in the tremolite-actinolite series and commonly occurs in shades of green, cream, white, brown, or gray. Its resistance to fracture has made it suitable for tools, weapons, ornaments, and sculpture in many cultures; in New Zealand, Maori traditions use pounamu, which includes nephrite, for valued objects such as tools and pendants.
