description Ilkhanate Overview
The Ilkhanate was a Mongol-ruled state centered on Iran and extending at various times into Iraq, Anatolia, the Caucasus, and parts of Central Asia. It was established by Hulagu Khan in the 13th century as a division of the wider Mongol Empire and lasted until the 1330s. Its rulers adopted many Persian administrative and cultural practices, and Ghazan Khan's conversion to Islam helped establish Islam as the court's dominant religion while preserving a strongly Persianate political culture.
