John Jay was an American statesman, diplomat, and jurist who became the first chief justice of the United States Supreme Court, serving from 1789 to 1795. He was one of the authors of The Federalist Papers, writing under the shared pseudonym Publius with Alexander Hamilton and James Madison. Jay later negotiated the 1794 treaty with Great Britain known as Jay's Treaty and served as governor of New York.
