Mapungubwe is an Iron Age archaeological site and cultural landscape in Limpopo, South Africa, occupied roughly from AD 900 to 1300. It was the center of a regional kingdom whose wealth was connected to trade, gold, and ivory, and excavations have recovered imported Chinese porcelain and Persian glass beads. The site is known for the gold-foil rhinoceros found in an elite burial and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage property.
