Mega Millions is a United States multijurisdictional jackpot lottery sold through participating state lotteries. The game began as The Big Game, with tickets first sold on August 31, 1996, and adopted the Mega Millions name in May 2002 after changes to its number pools and prize structure. It is played in 47 jurisdictions: 45 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
