description Melonworm Overview
Melonworm is the larval pest form of the moth Diaphania hyalinata (Linnaeus, 1767), a member of the family Crambidae. It occurs through much of Central and South America and the Caribbean and disperses seasonally into the southeastern United States. The caterpillars feed mainly on cucurbit foliage, especially squash, and can leave a lace-like skeleton of veins; when leaves are depleted they may scar or burrow into fruit. Adults have pearly white wings with dark brown margins, and the species affects squash, cucumber, melons, pumpkins, and related crops.
