description Newporte Overview
Newporte is a buried impact crater in Renville County, northwestern North Dakota, near the Canada-US border. It is about 3.2 kilometers in diameter and lies roughly 3 kilometers below younger sedimentary rocks. Oil exploration drilled several wells through the structure, and shocked quartz and feldspar in core samples support its impact origin. The Earth Impact Database gives an age of less than 500 million years, so the age is not confined to the Ordovician.
