description Pansy Overview
The pansy is a cultivated form of Viola tricolor, commonly referred to as Viola tricolor var. hortensis. It is a compact flowering plant valued for its flat, often multicolored blooms and its ability to flower during cool weather. Modern pansies were developed through selective breeding in early nineteenth-century England, including work associated with Lady Mary Elizabeth Bennett around 1810 to 1813.
They are grown as seasonal ornamentals and some flowers are edible.
