Stephen J. Field was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1863 to 1897. Before joining the Court, he was Chief Justice of California. Field was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln and became associated with a broad interpretation of constitutional liberty, including the doctrine later described as substantive due process.
His 34-year tenure was the longest on the Court at the time of his retirement.
