STEREO-A (Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory-Ahead) is one of two identical NASA solar observation probes launched together in October 2006. The twin spacecraft, which included the now-lost STEREO-B, were designed to provide the first stereoscopic 3D images of the Sun and study the properties of coronal mass ejections. STEREO-A travels slightly faster than Earth, moving ahead of our planet in its heliocentric orbit to offer a continuous, different vantage point of the solar surface.
