description Sugilite Overview
Sugilite is a rare purple to pink manganese-bearing cyclosilicate mineral, usually found as opaque masses rather than transparent crystals. It was first identified in 1944 on Iwagi Islet, Japan, by petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi and colleagues, and was named for Sugi when formally described in 1976. Gem-quality material associated with the Kalahari Manganese Field in South Africa is used in cabochons, beads, and mineral specimens.
