Tripodfish

The tripodfish, scientifically known as *Bathypterois grallator*, uses three elongated fin rays—two pelvic and one lower caudal fin—to stand motionless on the ocean floor. These specialized rays act like stilts, elevating the fish above the muddy abyssal substrate to wait for passing prey.

The tripodfish is a specialized deep-sea species adapted to the extreme pressures of the abyssal ocean environment. They are typically found at massive depths ranging from 2,900 to 15,400 feet, where sunlight cannot penetrate.

Because they live in the pitch-black abyssal zone, tripodfish stand motionless on their fin rays to conserve energy while waiting for tiny zooplankton and small crustaceans to drift by. Their elongated pectoral fins act as sensitive sensors to detect the subtle movements of prey in the dark water.

While their body size is relatively modest, often reaching about a foot in length, their three specialized fin rays can extend significantly longer than their actual bodies. This gives the *Bathypterois grallator* a massive, stilted stance to navigate and hunt over the soft mud of the deep-sea floor.
