Tristesse

The Tristesse boulder problem is a renowned climbing route located in the historic forest of Fontainebleau in France. Fontainebleau is globally recognized as the birthplace of modern bouldering. The area is famous for its endless sandstone boulders and distinct grading system.

Tristesse is notable as one of the earliest climbs in Fontainebleau to receive an official grade, establishing crucial benchmarks for difficulty within the area. It was first climbed in the mid-20th century by pioneer French climber Pierre Allard. It remains a highly respected testpiece for experienced climbers.

The route features incredibly challenging technical crimps and precise footwork, demanding high levels of balance and finger strength. It requires climbers to utilize delicate friction techniques specific to the fine sandstone of Fontainebleau. Because of its technical demands, it is favored mostly by highly experienced boulderers.

Historically, Tristesse was graded as a 6a, which was considered exceptionally difficult at the time of its early ascents. While the Fontainebleau grading system has evolved over the decades, the route remains a severe test of technical climbing. It helped establish the standards for the 6th degree of difficulty in bouldering.
