Löwenmensch (Lion Man)

The Löwenmensch, or Lion Man, is a prehistoric sculpture carved from mammoth ivory approximately 40,000 years ago during the Upper Paleolithic period. At roughly 40 millennia old, it is widely considered one of the oldest known works of figurative art in human history.

The figurine was discovered in the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave in the Swabian Jura mountains of Germany. It was initially found in 1939 by geologist Otto Völzing, though the fragmented pieces were not fully assembled until decades later by archaeologists.

The 30-centimeter-tall figurine depicts a human figure with the head of a cave lion, making it one of the earliest known examples of a therianthropic (half-human, half-animal) sculpture. Experts believe it likely held significant spiritual or religious meaning regarding the relationship between early humans and apex predators.

The sculpture was intricately carved from a single piece of mammoth tusk ivory using simple flint stone tools. Because mammoth ivory is incredibly hard and curved, creating the figure would have required extraordinary skill and taken an estimated 400 hours of labor.
