Jan Matzeliger

description Jan Matzeliger Overview

Jan Matzeliger was a Surinamese-American inventor who developed the first commercially successful shoe-lasting machine, patented in 1883. Born in Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), Matzeliger immigrated to the United States and worked in a shoe factory in Lynn, Massachusetts, where he observed the bottleneck in hand-lasting, the process of shaping and attaching the upper portion of a shoe to the sole. His machine could produce hundreds of shoes per day compared to the dozens a skilled worker could complete manually.
