description 156 Xanthippe Overview
156 Xanthippe is a main-belt asteroid discovered in 1875 by the Austrian astronomer Johann Palisa. It was named after Xanthippe, traditionally known as the wife of the ancient Athenian philosopher Socrates. The name comes from classical history and biography rather than from a physical feature of the asteroid. Its orbit places it among the numerous minor planets that travel around the Sun in the region between Mars and Jupiter.
