description 186 Celuta Overview

186 Celuta is a main-belt asteroid discovered by Henri Perrotin in 1878. Its name refers to Céluta, a Native American character in François-René de Chateaubriand’s novel Les Natchez. The object is one of the many numbered minor planets orbiting the Sun in the region between Mars and Jupiter. Asteroid classifications based on observed physical properties place Celuta among the S-type group, which is generally associated with stony, silicate-rich compositions, although such classifications are not direct samples of its surface.
