description Corn earworm Overview
The corn earworm (Helicoverpa zea) is a noctuid moth described by Boddie in 1850 and a polyphagous crop pest found across the Americas. Its larvae feed on reproductive parts of many plants, especially developing corn ears, but the species also attacks cotton, tomatoes, beans, soybeans and other crops. In corn, eggs are often laid on silk and the larvae move into the ear to feed on kernels, leaving frass and reducing crop quality.
