Diopside is a calcium-magnesium silicate mineral in the pyroxene group, with a monoclinic crystal structure and ideal formula CaMgSi2O6. It occurs in igneous and metamorphic rocks and may be white, gray, brown, or green; chromium-rich material forms the transparent green variety known as chrome diopside. Ordinary diopside is mainly of mineralogical interest, while transparent and strongly colored material is cut for jewelry and collected as gem rough or crystals.
