description Howlite Overview

Howlite is a white to gray borate mineral, a calcium borosilicate hydroxide, first identified in 1868 in Nova Scotia and named for the Canadian geologist Henry How. It typically occurs as nodules marked by dark, spiderweb-like veins. Its relatively low hardness allows it to take dye easily, and it is frequently colored to imitate turquoise in jewelry, as well as carved into beads and decorative objects.
