Fall armyworm

description Fall armyworm Overview

Fall armyworm is the common name for Spodoptera frugiperda, a noctuid moth whose caterpillar is a major agricultural pest. The species is native to the Americas and feeds on many grasses and crops, with maize, sorghum, and rice among the plants it can damage; the larvae often attack leaves and growing points. It was detected in Africa in 2016 and subsequently spread beyond its original range, creating a management problem for farmers in warm agricultural regions.
