Nur Muhammad Taraki was an Afghan communist politician, journalist, writer, and founding member of the People's Democratic Party of Afghanistan. After the PDPA-led Saur Revolution overthrew Mohammad Daoud Khan in April 1978, Taraki became chairman of the Revolutionary Council and head of the new Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. His government introduced radical reforms and used repression against opponents; Hafizullah Amin removed him from power in September 1979, and Taraki died later that year.
